Comparison of the combination of PRP and topical minoxidil to topical minoxidil alone on androgenetic alopecia

Leia Hyunyoung Son, Ashley Olivia Owens
TLDR Combining PRP with minoxidil improves hair growth and satisfaction more than minoxidil alone.
The study systematically reviewed three randomized controlled trials to compare the efficacy of combining platelet-rich plasma (PRP) with topical 5% minoxidil versus using topical minoxidil alone for treating androgenetic alopecia (AGA). Results indicated that the combination therapy led to increased hair density and higher patient satisfaction compared to minoxidil alone. Despite these positive outcomes, PRP is not FDA-approved for AGA and is considered an off-label treatment. The study concludes that further research is necessary to assess the long-term efficacy and potential need for maintenance therapy with this combination treatment.
