TLDR Hair cortisol is better than blood cortisol for measuring long-term stress in pregnant goats.
The study measured serum and hair cortisol concentrations in nine female Akkeçi goats during pregnancy to evaluate chronic stress. Hair samples were collected at specific intervals, while blood samples were obtained monthly. The analysis showed no significant differences in serum cortisol levels across different times or between primiparous and multiparous goats. However, significant differences were found in hair cortisol concentrations, indicating that hair cortisol is a more reliable biomarker for assessing long-term stress during pregnancy in these goats compared to serum cortisol.
