TLDR COVID-19 can directly trigger certain skin conditions like pustular dermatoses due to an inflammatory response.
The review investigated the connection between COVID-19 infection and acute pustular dermatoses, focusing on generalized pustular psoriasis (GPP) and acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis (AGEP). It included 40 cases, with 7 experiencing GPP and 33 diagnosed with AGEP. In 55% of cases, no drug trigger was identified, indicating a direct link to COVID-19. The study found that COVID-19 could trigger these conditions through an inflammatory response, with a longer onset time for AGEP compared to drug-induced cases. It also noted that viral infections could trigger psoriasis flares, with 84% of psoriasis patients testing positive for viral pathogens during flares. The study emphasized the role of a dysregulated immune response and genetic predisposition in developing these dermatoses in COVID-19 patients.
