COVID-19 with High Fever: A Trigger Factor for Alopecia Areata?

This document discusses a case of alopecia areata (AA) occurring immediately after a COVID-19 infection with high fever in a 38-year-old man. The patient experienced rapid hair loss on the scalp and beard following a severe fever due to COVID-19. Despite treatment with triamcinolone acetonide injections, oral prednisone, and topical steroids, the patient showed significant improvement after 5 months, with stable patches after 1 year. The study suggests a potential link between COVID-19 and AA, supported by a cross-sectional analysis where 42.4% of COVID-19 positive participants reported AA symptoms. However, a retrospective cohort study found no substantial link. The case highlights a possible temporal correlation between high fever from COVID-19 and AA onset, suggesting that fever may act as a trigger.
