Cross-Linked Features of Mouse Pelage Hair Resistant to Detergent Extraction

    The study investigated the resistance of mouse pelage hair to detergent extraction, focusing on cross-linked structures in the cuticle, cortex, and medulla. Hair samples from normal and mutant mice were analyzed using transmission electron microscopy after detergent treatment. Results showed that while the cortex and medulla largely resisted extraction, cuticle cells were more susceptible, especially in certain mutants. Notably, the matted and naked mutations exhibited significant cuticle cell extraction, indicating defective cross-linking. The findings suggested that structural defects in hair fibers might result from aberrant development or the absence of specific protein components, with implications for understanding hair pathology and development.
