TLDR Hair follicle cells can be grown without extra support and may help in wound healing.
The study demonstrated that dispersed hair follicle cells from plucked hairs could be successfully cultured on collagen type IV without the need for a biological feeder layer. The optimal calcium concentration for this culture was determined to be between 0.3-0.5 mM, which facilitated the best colony formation and growth, resulting in large colonies with a paving stone-like cell arrangement. The research suggested that these cultured cells could potentially be used for treating missing skin, offering an alternative to the commonly used cultured epidermal keratinocytes for wound dressing.
