TLDR Hair follicle stem cells can be cultured, but better methods are needed for longer growth.
The study aimed to investigate the location of the hair bulge area and establish basic technology for culturing hair follicle stem cells. Hair root samples were obtained from plastic surgery, and the putative hair follicle stem cells were cultured using specific media. Hoechst dye staining confirmed the presence of numerous cells in the bulge area of hair follicles. The stem cells successfully outgrew from the bulge area and were maintained for up to four days. The study suggested that further research was needed to develop a culture environment that could extend the duration of cell culture.
