Taxonomy for the Assessment of the Subjective Experience of Curly Hair Manageability

    Gabriela Daniels, Maxi Heitmayer
TLDR Hair curvature is the main factor affecting curly hair manageability and product preferences.
This study developed and validated a taxonomy to assess the subjective experience of curly hair manageability, focusing on individuals with natural curly hair types 3A and higher. Using a mixed-method design, the research involved thematic analysis of 14 interviews and an online survey with 506 female participants. The study confirmed that hair curvature is the most significant factor influencing hair goals, perceptions, and practices, with age also affecting product attitudes. The validated instrument measures the strength of hair goals and perceptions related to hair curvature and esteem, aiding in the development of products tailored to the manageability needs of very curly and textured hair.
