TLDR More skin lesions in lupus patients may indicate higher disease activity.
This study investigated the association between cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CLE) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) activity in a retrospective cross-sectional analysis of 93 patients, predominantly women, at a dermatology service in Argentina. It found that simultaneous presence of nonspecific and specific skin lesions, as well as having three or more different types of skin lesions, were statistically associated with increased systemic disease activity, particularly with symptoms like alopecia, hypocomplementemia, anti-DNAdc, and oral ulcers, but not with organ involvement. The findings suggest the need for prospective studies with larger patient groups.
