TLDR Hirsutism and acne indicate high androgen levels in women with PCOS, and early treatment can improve symptoms and quality of life.
This study investigated the relationship between cutaneous manifestations and biochemical hyperandrogenism in 71 women with PCOS. The prevalence of hirsutism, acne, and androgenic alopecia was 67%, 65%, and 51%, respectively. Elevated levels of total testosterone, free testosterone, and DHEAS were found in 66%, 51%, and 31% of patients. Significant correlations were observed between hirsutism and free testosterone/DHEAS, acne and free testosterone/total testosterone, and acanthosis nigricans and insulin. The study concludes that hirsutism and acne are reliable indicators of biochemical hyperandrogenism, suggesting that early intervention could improve cutaneous symptoms and quality of life for these patients.
