TLDR Cyclosporine combination therapy can regrow hair in severe alopecia areata but needs careful monitoring for side effects.
The study evaluated the effectiveness of cyclosporine combination therapy in 28 patients with severe or refractory alopecia areata. Patients were treated with oral cyclosporine, prednisolone, topical steroids, and minoxidil for at least 3 months. Results showed that 71% of patients experienced new hair growth within an average of 2.5 months. However, 47% of patients experienced side effects, including hypertrichosis and gastrointestinal disturbances, leading to therapy discontinuation in 3 cases. Despite side effects, the therapy was recommended for severe cases, with careful monitoring to prevent severe adverse effects.
