TLDR Alopecia areata patients have fewer protective regulatory B cells, which may contribute to the disease.
This study examined the role of IL-10–producing regulatory B cells (Bregs) in alopecia areata (AA) by comparing 22 AA patients to 13 healthy volunteers. Results showed a significant decrease in the frequency and IL-10 production of CD19+CD24hiCD38hi Bregs in AA patients, suggesting their protective role against AA by negatively regulating NKG2D+CD8+ T cells and IFN-γ production. Altered STAT signaling in Bregs from AA patients was also observed, indicating a potential mechanism for their regulatory role. Despite the small sample size, these findings suggest IL-10–producing Bregs as potential diagnostic and therapeutic targets for AA, warranting further research with larger samples.
