This study investigated the relationship between serum Vitamin D levels and alopecia areata (AA), as well as the effectiveness of vitamin D3 analogues in treating AA. In a randomized control trial with 100 patients, it was found that 69% had low serum Vitamin D levels. All participants were treated with topical calcipotriol for 6 months, resulting in a significant reduction in the severity of AA, as measured by the SALT score, from 20.7 to 9.4. The treatment was effective in 71% of patients. The study concludes that patients with AA often have lower Vitamin D levels and that vitamin D3 analogues can effectively improve hair growth in these individuals.
