A Case Study on Demodicosis in Golden Retriever

TLDR The Golden Retriever's skin condition improved after treatment.

A six-year-old Golden Retriever with symptoms of alopecia, itching, and erythema was diagnosed with patchy demodex infestation and secondary bacterial infection at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Nepal Polytechnic Institute. The diagnosis was confirmed through skin scraping and microscopic examination, which revealed the presence of Demodex mites. Treatment involved cleaning the lesions with medicated ketoconazole shampoo and administering systemic fixotic advance and Amoxicillin clavunate 375 mg for the bacterial infection. After 2 weeks, a follow-up skin scraping test was negative, indicating the absence of Demodex, and the dog's lesions were healing without red rashes.

A 24-year-old male has been using oral Finasteride 1mg/day for 6 months and nanoxidil for 10 months, recently switching to oral Minoxidil 2.5mg daily, with no progress. Suggestions include getting a scalp biopsy, consulting a dermatologist, and possibly trying higher doses of oral Minoxidil or switching to dutasteride.
