TLDR Choose deodorants with low allergenic ingredients and follow usage instructions to avoid skin issues.
This narrative review examines the dermatological composition of deodorants, highlighting potential skin risks associated with their ingredients. Fragrances and isothiazolinone preservatives are identified as primary causes of skin sensitization, while vehicles and surfactants like propylene glycol may contribute to irritation, especially under occlusive conditions. Aluminum salts effectively reduce sweat but can cause local adverse effects, which can be minimized with proper application. Magnesium hydroxide emerges as a promising alternative for odor control, offering good skin tolerability without blocking sweat ducts. The review concludes that selecting formulations with lower allergenic potential and providing proper usage guidance are crucial for minimizing skin issues while ensuring effective odor management.
