TLDR Skin changes can reveal serious hormone-related diseases, helping save lives.
This review highlights the field of dermatoendocrinology, emphasizing the skin's role as both an endocrine organ and a diagnostic tool for endocrine disorders. The skin can manifest signs of various endocrine diseases, such as acanthosis nigricans and androgenetic alopecia linked to insulin resistance, and other conditions like necrobiosis lipoidica diabeticorum (diabetes), pretibial myxedema (hyperthyroidism), and hyperpigmentation (primary adrenal insufficiency). The review includes 111 articles and discusses cases where skin inspection led to life-saving treatments. It underscores the importance of recognizing cutaneous signs for diagnosing serious endocrinopathies, potentially improving patient outcomes.
