TLDR Dermatologists need more training on isotretinoin's eye side effects.
The study assessed the knowledge and attitudes of 48 dermatologists in Aseer, Saudi Arabia, regarding ocular side effects of isotretinoin, a treatment for acne vulgaris. The results showed that while dermatologists generally recognized side effects like dry eye and contact lens intolerance, there was inconsistency in practices related to patient education, ophthalmic referrals, and management of refractive surgery during treatment. Most dermatologists did not routinely refer patients for eye exams before starting isotretinoin, and only a minority consistently prescribed lubricant eye drops or warned about refractive surgery. The study suggests the need for further educational training on isotretinoin's safety profile.
