TLDR Dermatologists help detect gender-based violence by identifying skin signs of abuse.
Dermatologists play a vital role in detecting Gender-Based Violence (GBV) through the identification of specific skin manifestations such as bruises, burns, lacerations, and hair-related conditions like alopecia. These signs can be indicative of abuse and are often visible during routine dermatological examinations. The article emphasizes the importance of collaboration between dermatologists and GBV responders to provide comprehensive care, including appropriate referrals to local support services. Maintaining confidentiality is crucial to building trust with survivors, and training in recognizing abuse signs is essential for dermatologists. By prioritizing survivor well-being and privacy, dermatologists can significantly contribute to the early detection and intervention of GBV.
