TLDR Certain hair and scalp features can predict the severity of alopecia areata.
This study investigated dermoscopic features in 85 patients with alopecia areata (AA) to identify markers associated with poor prognosis. Patients with poor prognostic indicators had higher Severity of Alopecia Tool (SALT) scores, indicating more severe hair loss. Key dermoscopic features linked to poor prognosis included yellow dots, black dots, broken hairs, and coudability hair, while vellus hair was associated with a better prognosis. The study highlights the importance of these dermoscopic markers in assessing disease severity and guiding treatment decisions.
