TLDR Proper diagnosis is essential for effective treatment of skin fungal infections.
The review discussed the importance of accurate diagnosis in treating fungal infections of the skin, which were caused by dermatophyte fungi confined to the keratin layer of the epidermis. These infections could be transmitted through human contact, soil, or animals and typically presented as erythematous, scaly eruptions. Diagnosis was crucial before starting treatment, especially oral therapy, with microscopy and culture being the gold standard. Tinea corporis and tinea cruris were common infections, with T. rubrum being the most prevalent causative organism. Tinea capitis was characterized by patchy hair loss and could lead to a painful swelling known as a kerion.
