Use and Consumer Perceptions of Dietary Supplements in the Fitness Community of Gaborone, Botswana
TLDR Many young adults in Gaborone use dietary supplements without knowing the risks.
The study explored the use and perceptions of dietary supplements within the fitness community in Gaborone, Botswana, revealing that these products were predominantly used by educated young adults of both genders. The internet served as the primary source of information, yet about half of the participants were unaware of potential adverse side effects prior to use. The study highlighted that only manufacturers were knowledgeable about the safety, quality, and efficacy of these supplements, which posed significant health risks if left unregulated. The findings underscored the need for future research on the clinical effects of dietary supplements in Botswana and the awareness among healthcare professionals.
