Does hair cortisol mediate the effects of sexual and gender minority stress on depression and anxiety? A structural equation modelling approach
February 2026
This study examined the role of hair cortisol in mediating the effects of minority stress on depression and anxiety among 328 sexually and gender-diverse individuals and 286 cis-gender heterosexuals in Switzerland. It found that gender-diverse individuals experienced higher levels of depression and anxiety and had lower hair cortisol levels compared to others. Minority stress was associated with increased depression and anxiety, while internalized stigma correlated with higher hair cortisol. The study suggests that the distinct stress profile of gender-diverse individuals may play a role in their mental health disparities.
