Dimensions of Drug Information

    Mark Sharp
TLDR A new method organizes drug information to improve data use and create a comprehensive drug database.
The document discussed the challenges posed by the high number and heterogeneity of drug information resources, which hindered effective usage. It explored the integration of drug information through ontology matching/merging (OM) and introduced "dimensions of drug information" as a method for early, pre-formal OM in the drug domain. By surveying 23 publicly available drug information resources, 39 dimensions relevant to pharmacy, chemistry, biology, and clinical medicine were identified and mapped. A classification system was developed, and analysis validated its partial effectiveness. The study refined this mapping into a six-level hierarchy and integrated the information into an experimental database. This database proved useful for automating data normalization and addressing complex use cases, moving towards a comprehensive drug database.
