TLDR Dupilumab can both cause and treat alopecia areata, with many patients experiencing hair regrowth.
This study explores the relationship between dupilumab, a medication for atopic dermatitis, and alopecia areata (AA). Among 156 patients treated with dupilumab, 5 developed AA, with a mean age of 25.8 years and an average onset of 15.5 weeks after starting treatment. Despite this, most patients experienced hair regrowth while continuing dupilumab. A literature review identified 20 adult cases of AA after dupilumab initiation, with 13 showing hair regrowth. The study suggests a complex interaction where dupilumab may both trigger and treat AA, with a noted paradoxical effect. The findings highlight the need for further research to understand the association and potential under-reporting of cases.
