TLDR Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial to prevent severe outcomes in congenital syphilis.
A 5-month-old male infant with early congenital syphilis presented with symptoms including alopecia, skin desquamation, and respiratory issues. Despite treatment with benzathine penicillin, antibiotics, and blood transfusion, the infant's condition deteriorated, resulting in death six days after hospitalization. The case underscores the severe impact of congenital syphilis and the critical need for early diagnosis and treatment. Delays in prenatal screening and healthcare access were significant factors in the delayed diagnosis. The report emphasizes the importance of prenatal screening and public health education to reduce congenital syphilis cases and improve outcomes for affected infants.
