TLDR Scarring alopecia is linked to higher rates of vitamin D deficiency, metabolic issues, mental health problems, thyroid disease, and other health conditions.
Mora Hurtado et al. investigate the comorbidities associated with scarring alopecia, revealing that patients with this condition have a higher prevalence of vitamin D deficiency, metabolic syndrome, depression, anxiety, thyroid disease, uterine fibroids, anemia, atopy, concomitant androgenetic alopecia, and breast cancer compared to national US rates. A significant association is identified between lichen planopilaris/frontal fibrosing alopecia and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Understanding these comorbidities is crucial for managing scarring alopecia and uncovering the pathogenetic mechanisms of its various forms.
