The study explored the role of Sonic Hedgehog (Shh) in the regeneration of epidermal texture patterns during wound healing in mice. It found that Shh expression varied at different stages of wound healing, with significant expression in adult mice between days 3-5 post-wounding and in embryonic mice from E14 onwards. Shh signaling was crucial for converting wound fibroblasts to those promoting hair follicle neogenesis, indicating its potential in true tissue regeneration. Inhibition of Shh with cyclopamine led to prolonged epithelialization and increased epidermal thickness, while recombinant Shh promoted epidermal cell proliferation and migration. The study suggested that while Shh downregulation aided skin texture regeneration, it was detrimental to hair follicle formation, highlighting its complex role in skin and hair regeneration.
