TLDR Topical 5% minoxidil is effective and safe for treating androgenetic alopecia, especially in younger patients with early-stage hair loss.
The study on topical 5% minoxidil for androgenetic alopecia (AGA) involved 10 patients over three months and demonstrated its efficacy and safety. Results showed varying degrees of improvement, with 40% of patients experiencing excellent improvement after a three-month follow-up. A significant negative correlation was found between disease duration and improvement, suggesting better outcomes with shorter disease duration. Minoxidil increased hair density by 9 hairs/cm², but continuous treatment was necessary to maintain results. Younger age and earlier alopecia stages were linked to better responses. No major adverse events were reported, but the small sample size limits the generalizability of the findings.

Key treatments for hair preservation include minoxidil, finasteride/dutasteride, and microneedling, with additional options like specific shampoos, oils, biotin, zinc, tretinoin, clascoterone, and low-level laser therapy. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, reducing stress, and addressing nutrient deficiencies can also support hair health.
