TLDR JAK inhibitors show promise for treating alopecia areata.
This systematic review study, involving 7,618 patients across 129 clinical studies, assessed the efficacy of treatments for alopecia areata (AA), a chronic inflammatory disease causing hair loss. The study found that while there were no approved treatments for AA globally, various therapies were under investigation, with Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors showing promising efficacy results. The review included 73 randomized controlled trials and highlighted that corticosteroids, JAK inhibitors, phototherapy, platelet-rich plasma, and diphenylcyclopropenone were the most frequently evaluated interventions. The study also noted a lack of research on adolescent patients and emphasized the need for future studies to focus on patient-relevant outcomes to improve holistic management of AA.
