TLDR Ursolic and shikimic acid together boost hair growth better than alone.
The study investigates the effects of ursolic and shikimic acid on hair follicle growth using in vitro testing on dermal papilla cells. It focuses on the biological activity of Illicium verum and Ocimum sanctum L., both individually and in combination. The research found that the combination of these botanical extracts significantly increased the expression of the insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) gene and inhibited the tumor necrosis growth factor (TGF-β1) gene more effectively than when tested alone. These results suggest a synergistic effect of the combination, promoting hair growth by enhancing IGF-1 expression and reducing TGF-β1 expression.

Ursolic acid, found in apple peels, lemongrass, rosemary, and lavender, may have anti-androgen effects similar to finasteride. It might be beneficial for hair health when used with other treatments like Minoxidil, Finasteride, and RU58841.
