New Epidemiological Outcomes in Anthropophilic Tinea Capitis: A Case Series Study in Northwestern Spain

TLDR Increased tinea capitis cases in Northwestern Spain may be linked to African immigration.
This retrospective observational study in Northwestern Spain included 24 children diagnosed with tinea capitis due to anthropophilic species from 2004 to 2019. The majority (75%) were males with an average age of 4.88 years. Most cases (83.3%) were from Africa, with others from South America (4.2%) and Spain (12.5%). Clinically, 70.8% presented with scaly patches and non-scarring alopecia. The main dermatophyte identified was Trichophyton soudanense (45.8%), followed by Microsporum audouinii (20.8%), Trichophyton tonsurans (12.5%), and Trichophyton violaceum (12.5%). The study suggested that the increase in anthropophilic infections might be linked to African immigration and could lead to a rise in tinea capitis incidence, posing a potential public health issue.
