TLDR Perinevoid alopecia can be effectively treated with non-invasive corticosteroids.
This study investigates perinevoid alopecia (PA), a rare variant of alopecia areata (AA), characterized by hair loss around a central pigmented nevus. The research involved 5 patients, predominantly male, with a median age of 24 years. The study found that PA shares clinical and dermoscopic features with AA, such as vellus hairs and short regrowing hairs. Treatment with topical and intralesional corticosteroids proved effective, with 3 patients experiencing complete hair regrowth. The study suggests that PA may be managed effectively with non-invasive treatments, contrasting with previous reports recommending surgical excision of the nevus. However, the study's small sample size and lack of standardized dermoscopy imaging are noted limitations. Further research is needed to confirm these findings and explore additional characteristics of PA.
