TLDR Pre-existing skin conditions and drug reactions are the main causes of exfoliative erythroderma.
This study analyzed 88 cases of exfoliative erythroderma (EE) over 25 years at a tertiary hospital, finding that pre-existing dermatoses (48.86%) and drug reactions (46.60%) were the primary causes. The study suggests that increased drug use, especially among the elderly, may be shifting the epidemiology towards drug reactions as a leading cause of EE. Atopic dermatitis was more prevalent than psoriasis, contrary to existing literature, possibly due to differences in treatment accessibility. The study also noted a low prevalence of neoplastic causes (2.27%) and a mortality rate of 4.55%. The findings highlight the importance of effective therapies for underlying dermatoses and the impact of drug interactions in older populations.
