TLDR Methotrexate-loaded formulations showed promise for psoriasis treatment but need careful evaluation.
The study evaluated methotrexate-loaded lamellar phases (C1CH and C1CHCE) as topical treatments for psoriasis in mice. These formulations, based on stearic acid, cholesterol, and ceramides, showed significant immunomodulatory effects and induced skin remodeling, increasing keratinization, epidermis thickness, and inflammatory infiltrate. They also affected various biomarkers, such as IL-1, IFN-γ, TNF-α, and prostaglandin E2. Despite the potential of liquid crystals for drug delivery, the study concluded that their use should be carefully assessed individually.
