TLDR The green alga Parachlorella sp. has potential for use in cosmetics and health products due to its antioxidant, anti-hypertensive, and hair growth properties.
The study explores the extracellular polysaccharides (EPS) from the edible green alga Parachlorella sp. BX1.5, identifying it as an acidic rhamnan with potential applications in cosmetics and health industries due to its stability and multifunctional properties. The bxEPS demonstrated antioxidant, anti-hypertensive, and anti-gray hair effects in vitro. Notably, a 0.2% bxEPS solution promoted hair growth and follicle enlargement in mice, highlighting its potential as a functional ingredient in health foods, pharmaceuticals, and sustainable biorefineries.
