Silybum marianum L., or milk thistle, is known for its liver-protective properties due to silymarin, which has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. This study reviews extraction technologies and explores silymarin's protective roles against skin damage, a less-studied area. The research, covering publications up to February 2025, shows that silymarin can prevent photoaging, manage acne, promote wound healing, and protect against UV damage by activating Nrf2 and preserving the extracellular matrix. The findings suggest significant dermatological benefits and emphasize the need for further clinical studies and sustainable extraction methods for large-scale production.
