TLDR Alopecia Areata often runs in families and is linked to other autoimmune conditions.
This systematic review and meta-analysis reveal a significant familial risk and prevalence of comorbidities among relatives of individuals with Alopecia Areata (AA). The study found that 95% of family members, including first-, second-, and third-degree relatives, have comorbid autoimmune or related conditions such as thyroid disease (4.7%), diabetes (10.1%), atopic dermatitis (18.9%), vitiligo (5.5%), and other autoimmune diseases (12.1%). These findings underscore the importance of comprehensive family monitoring, including regular health screenings and genetic counseling, to educate families on hereditary risks and guide early intervention strategies. Future large population-based studies are recommended to further explore these associations.
