TLDR Henna is a safer alternative to synthetic hair dyes but has limited color options.
This review examines the use of henna (Lawsonia inermis) as a natural hair dye, highlighting its safety compared to synthetic dyes, which can cause skin irritation and allergic reactions. The active compound, lawsone, binds to hair keratin, providing an orange-red to brown color. Combining henna with other herbs like indigo, amla, and hibiscus can enhance color variety. The study emphasizes the need for standardized evaluation and safety assessments, noting that while henna is safer, it has limitations in color range and stability. Future research should explore advanced formulations and clinical validation to establish henna as a globally accepted hair dye.
