TLDR There is unequal access to gender-affirming surgeries in Canada, with a need for better coverage and specialized programs.
This study analyzes the accessibility and insurance coverage of gender-affirming surgeries (GAS) in Canada, revealing significant variability across provinces and territories. Prince Edward Island offers the most comprehensive coverage, while Nunavut offers the least. Genital surgeries have the most extensive coverage, whereas facial surgeries are covered in only two provinces. The study highlights a disparity between coverage and the availability of GAS, with many procedures requiring out-of-province referrals. The authors advocate for broader coverage, the development of specialized GAS programs, and adherence to WPATH guidelines to improve access to necessary procedures for transgender individuals.
