Gene-Environment Interaction Between CYP1B1 and Oral Contraception on Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia

TLDR Oral contraceptive use may increase the risk of frontal fibrosing alopecia in women with a specific CYP1B1 gene variant.
This study examined the interaction between the CYP1B1 gene variant (c.1358A>G, p.Asn453Ser) and oral contraceptive pill (OCP) use on the risk of frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA) in 489 female patients and 34,254 controls. It found that the presence of an asparagine residue at position 453 of CYP1B1 was associated with a 1.9 times greater risk of FFA in OCP users, but no effect was observed in non-users. This suggests that OCP use may increase FFA risk in carriers of the CYP1B1 risk allele, emphasizing the role of gene-environment interactions in FFA pathogenesis.
