Integrative Study of Gene Expression and Protein Complexes

TLDR Cell processes depend on time-of-day and protein complex flexibility for skin health.
The study highlighted the shift from the 'one gene/one protein/one function' paradigm to an integrated view of cellular processes. It utilized circadian expression data from human epidermal stem cells to reveal that time-of-day dependent responses to proliferation and differentiation cues were crucial for skin homeostasis. The research combined gene expression data with protein structure information to demonstrate the temporal regulation of protein-complex assembly during differentiation. Additionally, it showed that human protein complexes consisted of a stable 'core' and a flexible 'periphery,' allowing them to function in a tissue-specific, context-dependent manner.
