TLDR Hair loss negatively affects self-esteem and identity.
This thesis explored the sociological impact of hair loss on self-esteem and identity, focusing on women with chemotherapy-induced alopecia and men with androgenic alopecia. Through qualitative research, it was found that both groups viewed hair loss as a negative or stigmatizing experience, despite attributing different meanings to their hair. The study highlighted the cultural significance of hair and how its loss affected personal interactions and self-perception. Participants employed various coping strategies, such as wearing wigs or shaving remaining hair, to manage the impact of hair loss on their lives.
