TLDR Hormonal imbalances, especially high androgen levels and insulin resistance, are linked to worse acne in adult women.
A study involving 82 women examined the link between hormonal imbalances and acne severity in adult females. The research found that increased acne severity was associated with higher levels of total and free testosterone, DHEAS, LH/FSH ratios, and SHBG, as well as increased insulin resistance. Moderate to severe acne cases often showed menstrual irregularity and PCOS characteristics. The study concludes that specific hormonal imbalances, particularly elevated androgen levels and insulin resistance, are closely related to acne severity, suggesting that targeting these imbalances could aid in managing the condition.
