TLDR HSL treatment speeds up hair growth and reduces oxidative stress in hair follicles of ob/ob mice.
In 2013, researchers discovered that applying N-(3-oxododecanoyl)-L-homoserine lactone (HSL) topically on ob/ob mice, which serve as a model for metabolic syndrome, promoted hair growth and decreased oxidative stress in hair follicles. The ob/ob mice, which normally experienced delayed hair growth taking over 6 weeks, showed full hair coverage by the fourth week after HSL treatment, in contrast to no significant improvement in the control group treated with a vehicle solution. The study also found a significant reduction in oxidative stress and an increase in the expression of antioxidative enzymes PON1 and PON3 in the skin treated with HSL. The study included 10 ob/ob mice, with 5 receiving HSL treatment and 5 receiving a vehicle solution. This suggests HSL's potential as a therapeutic agent for alopecia, particularly in the context of metabolic syndrome.
