TLDR Hydrogel-based hair follicle organoids could help treat hair loss and improve drug testing.
This review addresses the challenge of alopecia by focusing on advancements in hair follicle organoids (HFOs) and their potential applications. It highlights the transition from basic self-assembly models to clinically applicable HFOs, emphasizing the importance of de novo hair follicle neogenesis. The review synthesizes recent literature on the design and breakthroughs in HFO technology, particularly the use of functionalized hydrogels and 3D bioprinting to mimic the hair follicle niche. It also explores the potential of HFOs in drug screening and wound repair, suggesting that they could reduce animal testing and expedite the discovery of hair-growth-promoting compounds. The review aims to facilitate the development and clinical translation of effective hair follicle regeneration platforms.
