TLDR Macrophages play a crucial role in skin wound healing, with their numbers and sizes changing over time.
The study examined IBA-1-immunopositive macrophages in skin wound healing using male Wistar rats, identifying a diverse population of macrophages with varying sizes and shapes. It found a significant increase in macrophage numbers in the perinecrotic area, peaking on the 15th day post-injury. IBA-1 proved effective as an immunohistochemical marker for detecting these cells and assessing their morphometric parameters. The research highlights macrophage heterogeneity, with small macrophages prevalent during the inflammatory phase and medium-sized ones during differentiation, underscoring their crucial role in tissue repair and regenerative histogenesis.
