Molecular Expression Associated With Vibrissa Follicle Development And Differentiation

    Nigel L. Hammond
TLDR Id proteins, especially Id2 and Id3, are crucial for hair follicle development and stem cell regulation.
This thesis investigated the expression patterns of Id2 and Id3 proteins in the development and differentiation of vibrissa follicles in Wistar rats. It was found that Id2 was highly expressed in Merkel cells and the basal epidermis, with this expression continuing into adulthood. Id3 showed cytoplasmic, basally polarized expression in early-stage follicles, later switching to nuclear expression in various cell types. The study provided new insights into the roles of Id proteins in hair follicle development, suggesting their importance in epithelial-mesenchymal interactions and stem cell dynamics.
