IL-13 Protein Concentrates in the Epidermis of Lesional and Non-Lesional Skin of Atopic Dermatitis Patients

    G. Isola, Vagishwari Murugesan, Carolyn Jack
TLDR IL-13 protein is much higher in the skin of atopic dermatitis patients than in healthy skin.
This study investigates the role of IL-13 in the skin of patients with moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis (AD), focusing on its presence in both lesional and non-lesional skin. The research found that IL-13 protein concentration is significantly higher in the epidermis of both lesional and non-lesional AD skin compared to healthy subjects, with levels 4 times higher than IL-4. The study also identified increased IL-13+ Th2 and Tc2 cells in the lesional dermis and high IL-13 mRNA transcript densities in the AD epidermis. Using RNAscope, the study localized pathogenic Tc2 cells and IL-13 in the epidermis, suggesting these may contribute to persistent itch in AD. Further research is needed to understand if these cells affect remission.
