TLDR Insulin resistance is strongly linked to higher androgen levels in women with PCOS.
This study involving 100 women with PCOS found a strong association between insulin resistance and hyperandrogenism. Women with insulin resistance exhibited higher clinical and biochemical markers of hyperandrogenism, such as elevated mFG scores, total testosterone, and free androgen index, along with lower SHBG levels, compared to non-insulin-resistant participants. Insulin resistance was identified as an independent predictor of increased androgen levels, even after adjusting for age and body mass index. The findings suggest that early identification and management of insulin resistance in PCOS patients could improve both metabolic and reproductive outcomes.
