TLDR Patients with alopecia areata face high costs for wigs due to poor insurance coverage.
The study surveyed 626 individuals with alopecia areata to examine insurance coverage for cranial prostheses (CP), revealing that coverage was generally insufficient, adding to the financial and psychological burden on patients. The average cost of CP was $1,543, with insurance coverage ranging from $50 to full cost, but only 23% of those seeking coverage received it. Most participants were unaware of insurance options to offset costs, and 65.9% found their coverage inadequate. The study highlighted the need for better insurance policies, as current coverage is inconsistent and often excludes conditions like alopecia areata, unlike cancer-related hair loss.
